How to determine your
personality type

Determine your personality type

Nowadays people involved with determining personality types have no doubts that this knowledge is valid and using it correctly in people’s lives brings along significant positive results. But so far, the biggest weakness has been determining the type correctly.

If the type is determined correctly, it can be used very effectively to improve our quality of life, to have better relationships and to achieve success. But if the type is wrongly detected, it can instead lead to negative effects. The reason is simple – we can mistakenly start to regard our weak function as strong, or instead the other way around, and in the end, it will lead to burnout, disappointment, inferiority, broken relationships, etc. So, it is very important to determine your type correctly! How to do it?

Next, we look at the various options and tips on how to find our personality type as accurately as possible.

Broadly speaking, there are 4 different methods:

Having a specialist determine the type

This is without doubt the surest method so far. There is only one condition: you need to find a real expert. That means a person who has learned to diagnose types, preferably in a licensed school, who has been practicing it for a longer period (preferably for at least two years), and who has previously determined the types of enough people (preferably at least 100 persons).

In the socionics school of thought, it is believed that currently, the most secure method of diagnosis is by using open conversation. Different questions are asked in a natural and casual atmosphere. These may include questions on how the interviewee’s schooldays were, how the last holiday trip went, and so on. A specialist monitors semantics, it means that every word and phrase that a person uses has a certain meaning. For example, sensoric individuals use a completely different vocabulary than intuitive people, and so on.

This is a relatively complex technique, but the people who are good at it can very accurately determine the personality type of another person.

In summary: this is the most accurate method, provided that it is done by a true specialist. Unfortunately, there are still very few of these people, especially in the west and in the English-speaking world.

Using a test for determining the type

With this method, it is essential to know that the outcome will be significantly affected by our own perception of ourselves. And what we perceive as true might not be precisely who we really are. This may actually be our teacher, whose words we remember telling us about how to behave correctly, and who we are striving to be similar with. Or maybe it is one of our parents, whose words and demands surface trough us. Or it could also be us, if we want to seem better, stronger, and more beautiful than we are in reality.

The test can be used to get the correct result, but it is important to know that our test taking is affected by factors that we don’t even notice, they are at a very subtle level. Rather, it can be said that the test will give us direction and guidance on what to start thinking about in order to improve our self-awareness.

Therefore, it is advisable to regard the test result as one of the possible options, and to use it as the foundation for further investigating yourself.

Without a doubt, the result also depends on the test questions and methodology. The most used test for determining personality types – the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is undoubtedly valid, but the test will give us information on which of our characteristics are strong and weak at that specific moment. Such tests do not identify the nature we were born with. We have all obtained a lot of knowledge over the course of our lives, and when taking the test, we will approach it as an exam, where we will simply show our acquired knowledge.

Such knowledge is happily used by employers, because they are actually looking for people with the necessary skills. But more and more employers are beginning to understand that people’s acquired skills are only the top of the iceberg. If people do not have enough zest for life, when they are burdened with stress, when motivation is weak, when there is no enthusiasm and people can get burnt out – then the reason lies in the part that is hidden underwater. And the underwater part – our inherent nature – is not determined by the routine tests.

Much more accurate are tests, which test people on many different levels. By putting people into different situations and by assessing a number of different criteria, it is possible to get accurate results for our true nature.

As a summary: tests are a good way to start learning about yourself, but we should bear in mind that the test results will be influenced by the false perceptions that we have of ourselves.

Determine your personality type

Determining the type among close people

In cases where we have friends that are also interested in similar topics, and who already have knowledge of personality types, then this a chance to talk about it together. This is certainly an interesting topic of conversation and good communication, but if we do not have a thorough understanding, then it will just remain at the level of a pleasant conversation.

If we get any benefit from such communication, then it is finding out how others see us. We can find out how others see us, how we seem to the outside world. You can also arrange a variety of experiments and analyse a variety of behaviours together.

In summary: joint discussions with friends and acquaintances can be interesting and help us see ourselves from aside, but if we do not have a thorough understanding of it, then we can’t find out our type in that way.

Determining the type by yourself

It is possible, but here, too, one must know how to do it right. It should be said right away that simply recognising ourselves by reading the descriptions of various types is very difficult. Our false ego, or the false picture we have created, and our mind, which wants to show us in a better light, distract us from seeing the truth objectively.

In order to successfully determine our type, one must take into account the following recommendations.

In order to get to know ourselves, we need to start monitoring our actions from aside. We should be able to see how we behave in different situations by using our intelligence. It is important that we do it impartially, without evaluating it. We just admit that “Oh, in that situation, I act like this.”

For example, we can keep track of how we act when we encounter a new situation or if we meet new people – whether I start acting immediately, begin to actively communicate, or keep quietly aside at the beginning, and so on. Or what I usually say when I want an activity to be stopped – do I say that, “It is useless!”, “There is no time!”, “It is already good enough!”, “It’s not helpful!”, etc.

Of course, such an analysis also requires knowledge, but its advantage is that we have a lot of time – we have our whole lives ahead of us to get to know ourselves. You can make observations and then even from our books to see what such behaviour means and what type it is characteristic of.

One more important thing about self-monitoring is that we do it first-hand, it means that we observe how we behave in a given situation. This should not be confused with imagining how we would behave. It is important to monitor ourselves “on-line”, in various real-life situations.

Important: learn to live in a way where you constantly observe yourself from aside!

We can successfully use the information we get from observing ourselves and others for making comparisons. This is a very good technique to understand one’s strong and weak functions. It is important to compare different people in similar situations. We can see how they behave, what kind of vocabulary they use, how reasoned their story is, what are their emotions, etc.

Comparing is especially necessary for determining our weak functions. In case we have some strong functions, such as logic, then we can very easily determine the other person’s reasoning ability. It is because we are ourselves experts in this by nature. But if our logic is weak, it is very difficult for us to see the whole scale, we are unable to say for certain whether someone’s logic function is strong or not.

In case we consider ourselves as strong logicians, but in fact we are not, then the comparison technique helps a lot. Let’s consider a few situations where it is necessary, for example, to use making connections and presentation of facts, assessment of benefits, knowledge of the law, and so on, and we compare how other people do it. The more different people we observe in similar situations and compare to ourselves, the clearer the picture of our own strengths and weaknesses becomes.

Important: be objective and honest with yourself!

Good knowledge of the various functions

There is no benefit from any of the above if we don’t know what we actually need to monitor and compare. That is why knowledge of the theory is the basis for everything. It is necessary to know what exactly logic and ethics are, how sensorics and intuition is expressed in us. How to recognise an extrovert and an introvert, what kind of person is rational, and who is an irrationalist.

In our pages you will get a good overview of them, and also of other psychological characteristics, so read read more and try to understand the peculiarities of different functions.

It is very important to be patient and to not rush with making decisions in the process of getting to know yourself. The more information we gather about ourselves and the more we ponder over it, the more accurate the final result that we get will be.

Important: it is better to leave your type undetermined than to get it wrong and determine it wrongly!

In conclusion about independently determining the type: this is a good method that certainly allows to correctly determine one’s type, but it requires good knowledge of theory, work with yourself, and patience.

And it is always best to use the combined method, i.e., all of the above techniques in parallel. In addition to constant monitoring and comparing ourselves with others, we interact with people that are also interested in these topics, we find an expert, and take a variety of tests. By constantly developing ourselves in that way, we can become much more aware, we will be more successful in life, and our relationship with others will improve.
